Michel GARNEAU

Michel Garneau is a poet and playwright. He was a recipient of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Les petits chevals amoureux (poetry) in 1978, and Mademoiselle Rouge, a drama, in 1990. He is the author of some 50 works, including 40 plays. The most well-known are probably: Quatre à quatre (1973), Émilie ne sera plus jamais cueillie par l’anémone (1981), Les guerriers (1989), and Mademoiselle Rouge (1989). His plays have been translated into English, Portuguese, German and Spanish, and have been produced internationally. The tour of his translations of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Macbeth and Corialanus, directed by Robert Lepage, was widely acclaimed. Michel Garneau is well-known for his collaboration, as narrator, on numerous documentary films produced by the National Film Board of Canada and various other production companies. He was also for many years the host of "Les Décrocheurs d’étoiles" for Radio-Canada .In 2007 he published a French translation of the poems by Leonard Cohen included in Book of Longing.

Synopsis
  The playwright imagines a ragtime encounter between Calamity Jane, who is the madam of a brothel, and Scott Joplin at the turn of the 19th century. A theatrical poem which invokes love in all its incarnations, the power of women, motherhood and music, and the small and large compromises of the body.

Synopsis

  Suggested by the life and works of Emily Dickinson, Emilie is neither a biographical nor a historical play, but rather a piece about language and music. From her garden where she is both flower and gardener, Emilie watches over her mother’s slow, sleepy death.   This is a theatrical quartet where four generations of mothers and daughters confront each other and their experiences of what it means to be a wife and a woman. The soliloquies of the four women blend into a dialogue between the older women and the youngest daughter who struggles to throw off the yoke of inherited attitudes and yearns to reinvent love.

Synopsis
  Strauss and Pesant takes a symbolic look at women’s lot in a society where there is collusion between State and Church. In their attitudes and relationship with Rosa, the two male characters, Joseph-Albert Strauss, police captain, and His Excellency Emilien Pesant, Bishop, illustrate how the institutions they embody exercise their misogynous power over women’s lives.

D’outre-tombe, les deux hommes évoquent cette bataille de quinze minutes qu’ils se sont livrée, se questionnent sur ce qu’il en reste et sur ce que l’Histoire en a retenu. Et puis, comme naturellement, ils reviennent à leurs enfances respectives… et à leurs nounous, Angélique et Jennifer!
